Broubster Leans is a highland reserve located seven miles southwest of Thurso in Caithness, featuring a diverse mix of wet grassland, pools, channels, and rush pastures. This picturesque farmland setting is vital for breeding waders in summer and wintering wildfowl, making it an essential protected area for wildlife. The reserve is particularly important as wetland habitats are rapidly disappearing, and it plays a crucial role in conservation efforts. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see Greylag Geese, Whooper Swans, and Northern Lapwings, especially in February when activity peaks. The summer months bring vibrant blooms that attract the Great Yellow Bumblebee, while June is an excellent time to spot Sedge Warblers and Eurasian Skylarks at dusk. For the best chances to observe various species, visit during the early hours or late evenings, particularly in February and June.
