Brodgar is a stunning nature reserve located between the lochs of Harray and Stenness in Neolithic Orkney, bordered by the iconic Ring of Brodgar. This wildlife haven features a diverse range of habitats, including grasslands and wetland areas, making it an ideal spot for various bird species such as Curlews, Snipe, Lapwings, and Dunlins. Since 2001, management efforts have focused on enhancing conditions for waders and pollinators, creating a thriving environment for wildlife. Visitors to Brodgar can expect to see a variety of species, particularly in June when activity peaks. Look out for Black Swans and Mute Swans around 10:00 and 01:00 respectively, while Redshanks and Great Skuas are best observed at dusk around 20:00. The grasslands come alive with the calls of Curlews and the display flights of Lapwings, making this an excellent time for birdwatching. Additionally, winter months attract a range of wildfowl, including ducks and swans, providing year-round interest.
