Blacktoft Sands is a stunning RSPB nature reserve located on the south bank of the River Ouse in East Yorkshire. Renowned for its extensive tidal reedbeds, which are the largest in England, the reserve provides a vital habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including Marsh Harriers, Bitterns, and Bearded Tits. The 32-acre site features six shallow lagoons and grazing marshland, making it a key area for breeding and wintering waterfowl. Visitors can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with Tree Sparrows peaking in September and best observed around midnight. July is ideal for spotting Spotted Redshanks, while October brings Teal and Greylag Geese. The reserve is particularly lively in September, with peak activity occurring around 1:00 AM. For birdwatchers, dusk in June is the perfect time to catch sight of Western Marsh Harriers soaring overhead.
