Birsay Moors is a dramatic expanse of moorland and blanket bog located in Orkney, Scotland. This internationally important site is renowned for its breeding populations of Hen Harriers and Red-throated Divers, and it features one of Scotland's largest communal winter roosts for Hen Harriers. The reserve's diverse habitats, including isolated lochans and grassland fringes, support a variety of moorland birds and provide essential conditions for wildlife, including Orkney voles. Visitors to Birsay Moors can expect to see a range of bird species throughout the year, with notable sightings of Short-eared Owls peaking in June at dawn. September is the best month for observing Rock Doves and Starlings, particularly around 1:00 AM. Other species such as Northern Lapwings and Hen Harriers can also be spotted, with their peak activity occurring in February. The unique combination of habitats makes this reserve a must-visit for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
