Berney Marshes and Breydon Water, located in the Norfolk Broads, provide a rich habitat of wet grassland, intertidal mud, and saltmarsh, making it an ideal sanctuary for wildfowl and wading birds. Accessible only by train to Berney Arms station or via public footpath from Great Yarmouth or Reedham, this reserve is renowned for its significant populations of waterbirds, particularly during the winter months when thousands gather to feed and rest. Birdwatchers can expect to see a variety of species, with peak sightings occurring in February, particularly around midnight. Look for Marsh Harriers and Long-billed Dowitchers during this time, while the warmer months may reveal Eurasian Bitterns at dusk in May. Other notable species include Hedgehogs and Robins, with the latter peaking in November, making Berney Marshes and Breydon Water a dynamic destination for wildlife enthusiasts year-round.
