Balranald Nature Reserve, located on the north-west coast of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, is an RSPB reserve celebrated for its diverse habitats, including sandy beaches, rocky foreshore, sand dunes, and grassland rich in wildflowers. This Hebridean haven is integral to the UK Corncrake recovery programme and offers visitors a chance to learn about traditional crofting agriculture while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of bird species, particularly in May when activity peaks. Look out for Northern Lapwings, Redshanks, and Barnacle Geese, best observed at dusk around 22:00. June is notable for the distinctive calls of Corncrakes and Corn Buntings, with optimal viewing times around 01:00 and 11:00, respectively. Other breeding birds, including Oystercatchers and Dunlins, can also be spotted during this vibrant season.
