Aylesbeare Common is a serene stretch of heathland located in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This protected area is part of the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths National Nature Reserve and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Natura 2000 site, highlighting its significance for wildlife. The landscape features a mix of heathland and woodland, interspersed with streams and ponds, creating a vibrant habitat for various species. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly during the summer months when Dartford Warblers and Nightjars are active. Notable sightings include the Eurasian Nightjar, best observed at dusk in June, and the Emperor Dragonfly, peaking in July. Other species of interest include Redpolls and Lesser Whitethroats, both best spotted in June and August respectively during evening hours. The diverse insect life, including butterflies and dragonflies, adds to the reserve's charm, making it a prime spot for nature enthusiasts.
