Adur Estuary

The Adur Estuary is a 62.2-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located on the western outskirts of Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex. This RSPB nature reserve features vital coastal habitats, including saltmarsh and intertidal mudflats, which provide essential feeding and nesting grounds for a variety of bird species. While public access is restricted to protect the wildlife and fragile habitat, stunning views of the estuary can be enjoyed from nearby footpaths. Birdwatchers can look forward to observing a diverse range of species throughout the year. Notable sightings include Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers, with peak activity occurring in March. The best times for viewing are often around midnight, particularly for Song Thrushes in October and Redshanks in June. Other species to watch for include Herring Gulls in November and Cetti's Warblers in May, making the estuary a vibrant spot for wildlife enthusiasts.
