Rum National Nature Reserve is a stunning landscape characterized by high mountains, sweeping glens, and rugged coastlines. This National Nature Reserve (NNR) is renowned for its dramatic scenery and wild atmosphere, offering opportunities for volunteering, study, and exploration. Visitors can experience a unique ecosystem that includes extinct volcanoes and a rich variety of wildlife, including one of the world's largest colonies of Manx shearwater, which constitutes about 30% of the global breeding population. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a range of species throughout the year, with notable peaks in sightings for Oystercatcher and Chaffinch in February, and Greylag Goose and Grey Heron in August. January is particularly active, showcasing species such as Hooded Crow, Shag, and Curlew. For the best experience, early morning visits around midnight are recommended for observing these birds, while March offers opportunities to spot Eider and Blackbird as they become more prominent in the landscape.
