Loch Leven National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a significant habitat featuring a vast expanse of open water, making it a prime location for diverse wildlife. Recognised for its rich biodiversity, it boasts the highest number of freshwater breeding ducks in inland Europe and is steeped in history, with connections to Mary Queen of Scots. The reserve offers opportunities for volunteering, outdoor learning, and research, inviting visitors to engage with nature in a meaningful way. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with red squirrels being particularly active in October. The best time to observe them is around 1:00 AM. Other notable sightings include buff-tailed bumblebees peaking in June and grey squirrels in December. Winter months attract large flocks of wildfowl, while ospreys can be spotted during the summer months as they hunt for fish.
