Craigellachie National Nature Reserve, designated as an NNR in 1961, spans 257 hectares on the eastern slopes of the Monadhliath range, just minutes from Aviemore. This stunning reserve features peaceful birch woodlands, rocky crags, tree-fringed lochs, and open heath, making it one of the largest remaining birch habitats in Speyside. Visitors can explore a network of paths, enjoy breathtaking views from the summit, and learn about the area's natural history through displays at the nearby youth hostel. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year, with peak activity in June. Notable sightings include the European Pied Flycatcher, best observed around 16:00, and Siskins, which peak in April. The reserve is also home to Ospreys, best spotted at dusk in June, and a range of songbirds like Robins and Chaffinches, which are most active around 01:00. Spring and summer are particularly vibrant, with the birch trees alive with insect activity and birdsong.
