Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve is a stunning expanse of mudflats and saltmarsh located about 10 km south of Dumfries in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Covering 82 square kilometres, this National Nature Reserve (NNR) is an internationally significant habitat for a variety of wetland species. The reserve features a mix of bare mud, sand, and marshes, along with neutral grassland, and is managed by NatureScot, balancing conservation with human activities. Birdwatchers will find Caerlaverock particularly rewarding, especially during the winter months when barnacle geese, teal, and waders are abundant. February is the best month for sightings, with peak activity around midnight. Visitors can also enjoy the dawn chorus in summer and may be lucky enough to hear the rare natterjack toads. For breathtaking views and wildlife experiences, visiting at sunrise or sunset is highly recommended.
