Port Bán is a 13-acre nature reserve located along the banks of the river Toon in County Cork. This site features a diverse range of habitats, including cutover bog, heath, wet woodland, and wet grassland, which supports a variety of Atlantic flora unique to the Irish west coast. Notable plant species include Irish Spurge, St Patrick’s cabbage, and large-flowered Butterwort, while the reserve is also home to a range of mammals such as badger, fox, and hedgehog. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a variety of birds, including birds of prey like sparrowhawk and hen harrier, as well as riverine species such as kingfisher, dipper, and heron. The best times to visit are during the spring and summer months when bird activity is at its peak, and the lush vegetation enhances the overall experience of this tranquil reserve.
