Newcastle Lake, located in north County Meath, is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary featuring a secluded lake surrounded by mixed woodland and reed beds. This reserve is part of the river Dee system and is recognized for its ecological significance, hosting species of national interest such as the Natterer’s Bat. While not open to the public without an appointment, it serves as an important site for wildlife conservation. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot a variety of species including Kingfishers, Otters, Cormorants, Grebes, and Swans around the lake. In summer, the area comes alive with dragonflies and the acrobatics of Daubenton’s bats. Although specific sightings data is limited, the rich biodiversity makes Newcastle Lake a noteworthy location for observing both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.
