Y Foryd Local Nature Reserve

Y Foryd Local Nature Reserve, located in Gwynedd, Wales, encompasses Foryd Bay at the south-western end of the Menai Strait. This tidal bay features extensive mudflats, salt marshes, and a shingle spit that partially obstructs its mouth. The area is rich in history, with Fort Belan from the 18th century and potential Roman structures identified nearby, contributing to its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of bird species, particularly during winter and migration periods. Notable visitors include large flocks of wildfowl and waders, with wigeon peaking at over 3,000 individuals. Other species to look out for include brent goose, jack snipe, spotted redshank, and greenshank, while terns can often be seen roosting at the bay's mouth.
