Thrislington National Nature Reserve

Thrislington National Nature Reserve, located in County Durham, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest renowned for its extensive primary magnesian limestone grassland. Situated about 1 km east of Ferryhill, the reserve features a mix of undisturbed and disturbed areas, showcasing a variety of flora, including the locally rare mountain everlasting and nationally scarce dark-red helleborine. The site is a haven for diverse invertebrates, making it a significant ecological area in Great Britain. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a range of species, particularly in June when activity peaks. Look out for butterflies such as the Common Blue and Northern Brown Argus, as well as the nationally notable Durham argus. Birdwatchers may spot Woodpigeons and Collared Doves, especially in October and August, respectively. The best time for sightings across various species tends to be around 01:00, making it an ideal time for nocturnal exploration.
