Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve

Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve is an offshore barrier island located between Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea in north Norfolk. Characterised by its sand dunes, salt marsh, intertidal flats, and shingle, the island is a vital habitat for numerous bird species. It supports internationally significant breeding populations of Sandwich and little terns, as well as common and Arctic terns. The reserve, acquired by the National Trust in 1923, is part of the North Norfolk Coast SSSI and is protected under Natura 2000 and Ramsar designations. For wildlife enthusiasts, January is the best month to visit, with peak sightings of wigeon, lapwing, and redshank occurring around midnight. Other notable species include buzzards in May and reed warblers in September. The island's diverse habitats also host various plants and insects, making it a fascinating destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
