Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve

Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve, located on the southern edge of the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire, spans 305.3 hectares and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Established in 1951, this reserve features a rich variety of habitats, including chalk grassland, which supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a vital area for conservation and biodiversity. Visitors to Pewsey Downs can expect to see a variety of butterfly species, particularly in the summer months. Notable sightings include the Small Heath and Meadow Brown, which peak in September and August, respectively. May is an excellent time to spot the Green Hairstreak and Red-legged Partridge, while the Comma butterfly can be observed in October. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for the best chance of witnessing these species in action.
