Penhow Woodlands National Nature Reserve

Penhow Woodlands National Nature Reserve, located near the village of Penhow in south east Wales, spans 24 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland. This National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest features a diverse habitat dominated by ash, small-leaved lime, wych elm, and gean, with a hazel understorey. The site is managed through coppicing, promoting a light-filled woodland floor that supports a variety of rare plants, making it an increasingly valuable habitat in the UK. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Buzzard and Mistle Thrush, with peak sightings occurring in February. The reserve also hosts the 7-spot Ladybird in March and the Common Darter dragonfly in August. Visitors are encouraged to explore during these peak months for the best chances of observing these species in their natural habitat.
