Monks Wood National Nature Reserve

Monks Wood National Nature Reserve spans 157 hectares (390 acres) north-west of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Recognised as a Grade I Nature Conservation Review site, it features essential lowland woodland primarily of the wet ash-maple type. The reserve boasts a diverse habitat with ancient woodland flora, ponds, streams, and herb-rich grassland, while also being home to the rare wild service tree, particularly in The Odd Quarter, which is private and not open to the public. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Dark-edged Bee-fly and Common Red Soldier Beetle, with peak activity noted in June. November is notable for sightings of Carrion Crow and Muntjac. Visitors may find the best times to observe wildlife around midnight, particularly in June when overall activity is highest.
