Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve

Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve spans 2 square kilometres of diverse woodland located on the south-west side of the Avon Gorge in North Somerset, near Bristol. This area, which includes the historic Stokeleigh Camp hillfort, is rich in natural and historical significance. The reserve features rare tree species, including multiple Sorbus varieties, and is designated as a national nature reserve and part of the Avon Gorge Site of Special Scientific Interest. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species throughout the year, with peak observations in January for birds like the Robin and Blackbird. Spring brings the Holly Blue butterfly in May, while the Small White and Buzzard are best seen in July. The reserve's rich flora also includes unique species like the Bristol rockcress, which flowers in April, making it an excellent time to visit for both plant and animal sightings.
