Kenfig Pool and Dunes National Nature Reserve

Kenfig Pool and Dunes National Nature Reserve, located near Porthcawl in Bridgend, is a significant area of natural beauty and ecological importance. Spanning 28.3 hectares, it features the second largest freshwater lake in south Wales, surrounded by unique sand dunes formed by historical storms. The reserve is a vital habitat for various wildlife, particularly migratory birds, and is home to the remains of the medieval borough of Kenfig, with its castle keep still visible. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with notable peaks in January for Canada Geese, Mute Swans, and Great Crested Grebes. February is ideal for spotting Robins, while Chiffchaffs are best observed in October. The reserve is particularly active at midnight, making it an intriguing destination for night-time visits. August also brings opportunities to see Shrill Carder Bees, adding to the diverse array of wildlife present.
