Holt Heath National Nature Reserve

Holt Heath National Nature Reserve spans 4.88 square kilometres and is located four miles north-east of Wimborne Minster in east Dorset. This diverse habitat features dry and wet heathland, bog, and ancient woodland, and is designated as a national nature reserve, Special Protection Area, Special Area of Conservation, and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Owned by the National Trust and managed with Natural England, it is a vital refuge for various heathland species, including all six native British reptiles. Visitors to Holt Heath can look for a range of wildlife, particularly during peak activity times in September and October. Notable species include the Common Toad and Smooth Snake, both of which have recorded sightings peaking around 01:00. The reserve is also home to rare breeding birds such as the Eurasian Hobby, nightjar, Dartford warbler, and woodlark, making it a rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year.
