Holme Fen National Nature Reserve

Holme Fen National Nature Reserve spans 269.4 hectares and is located near Holme in Huntingdonshire. Recognised as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Grade I Nature Conservation Review site, it is part of the ambitious Great Fen project aimed at creating a vast wetland wildlife area. The reserve features the finest example of birch woodland in lowland Britain and supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including around 450 species of fungi and various bird species such as the Eurasian siskin and nightingale. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species like the Chinese Water Deer and Comma butterfly, with peak sightings occurring in January and July, respectively. October is particularly active, showcasing birds like the Wren and Lesser Redpoll, often observed around midnight. Other notable species include Roe Deer and Goldfinch, which can be spotted in November, making Holme Fen a rewarding destination for nature watchers throughout the year.
