Hog Cliff National Nature Reserve

Hog Cliff National Nature Reserve is a designated National Nature Reserve (NNR) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located in the Dorset Downs, approximately 2 kilometres south-east of Maiden Newton. Spanning 86.7 hectares, the reserve features a diverse landscape of chalk downland, grassland, scrub, and small woodlands primarily consisting of ash and oak. The site is part of the larger Dorset National Landscape area and is adjacent to the Court Farm, Sydling SSSI. Visitors to Hog Cliff can expect to see a variety of butterfly species, particularly in August when activity peaks. Look out for the Large White, Common Blue, and Small Skipper, all of which have notable sightings during this month. The best time for observation is around 01:00, making it an ideal early morning or late evening visit for butterfly enthusiasts. The reserve also supports rare species like the Adonis blue and marsh fritillary butterflies, adding to its wildlife appeal.
