Hamford Water National Nature Reserve

Hamford Water National Nature Reserve spans 2,185.8 hectares between Walton-on-the-Naze and Harwich in Essex, featuring a diverse landscape of tidal inlets, marsh grasslands, mud and sand flats, salt marshes, and islands. Recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it holds international significance for breeding little terns and wintering dark-bellied brent geese, alongside a variety of other bird species. The reserve also supports rare plants like hog's fennel and slender hare's-ear, making it a vital habitat for both flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as swallows, golden-samphire, and avocets, with peak activity noted in May, particularly around 01:00. The reserve's rich biodiversity makes it an ideal spot for birdwatching, especially during the summer months when many species are most active. Visitors are encouraged to explore the area during low tide to access Horsey Island and enjoy the unique coastal ecosystem.
