Hales Wood National Nature Reserve

Hales Wood National Nature Reserve, located north-east of Saffron Walden in Essex, encompasses 15.4 hectares of ancient coppice wet ash and maple on chalky boulder clay. It is designated as a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, highlighting its ecological significance. The diverse shrub layer features notable plants such as wayfaring-trees, guelder roses, spurge-laurel, and the nationally uncommon oxlip. While Hales Wood itself is not accessible, nearby Shadwell Wood can be reached via a footpath from Walden Road. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for various species, with notable sightings including cantharis rustica and helophilus pendulus, both peaking in July. Common lizards have also been observed during this month. The best time for activity is around 01:00, making late-night visits particularly rewarding for those hoping to catch a glimpse of these species.
