Glen Nant National Nature Reserve

Glen Nant National Nature Reserve, located south of Taynuilt in Argyll and Bute, encompasses 339 hectares of stunning Atlantic Oakwood. This NNR, managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, showcases one of the largest areas of upland oak woodland in north Argyll. Historically, the woodland was coppiced for bark and charcoal production, but efforts have been made to restore natural habitats and remove non-native conifers since its designation in 1979. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species, particularly in March when activity peaks for several notable plants and fungi, including Tamarisk Scalewort and Opposite-leaved Golden-saxifrage. The Red Squirrel is also a highlight, with sightings peaking in October. Visitors are encouraged to explore the reserve during these months for the best chances of observing diverse flora and fauna.
