Forge Valley Woods National Nature Reserve

Forge Valley Woods National Nature Reserve is located in North Yorkshire within the North York Moors National Park, covering over 63 hectares (160 acres) along the River Derwent. This ancient woodland, thought to be around 6,000 years old, was historically significant for charcoal production used in local iron forges. The reserve is managed by Raincliffe Woods Community Enterprise CIC, making it a vital area for both conservation and community engagement. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the 7-spot Ladybird and Blue Tit, with notable peaks in sightings during February. December is a particularly active month for various species, including Hazel and Pedunculate Oak, with best observation times around midnight. Visitors in spring can enjoy the blooming Wood Anemone and Moschatel, while the summer months may reveal Mallards along the river.
