Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve

Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve, located on Exmoor in Somerset, features Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in southern England outside of Dartmoor, rising to 519 metres. This stunning sandstone hill offers expansive views over moorland and the Bristol Channel. The reserve, rich in history, includes Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age hill forts, and is designated as both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as Bog-cotton, which peaks in October, and various birds like the Treecreeper in January and the Dipper in July. Notably, many species show peak activity around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding. April is a great month for observing Marsh Tits and Anoplotrupes stercorosus, while October remains the best overall month for wildlife sightings.
