Cliburn Moss National Nature Reserve

Cliburn Moss National Nature Reserve, located northwest of Cliburn village in Cumbria, encompasses 26 hectares of diverse wetland habitats formed by a glacial valley hollow. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the reserve aims to restore fen, heath, and mire areas while managing tree growth. Established as a national nature reserve in 1996, it offers a vital refuge for various species following past peat cutting and drainage activities. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for Red Squirrels and Roe Deer, particularly active in January. May is an excellent month for observing Mallards and Grey Herons, while June brings sightings of Eyed Ladybirds and Grey Wagtails. September is notable for Pied Wagtails and Chiffchaffs, with October being the best time to spot Nuthatches. Peak activity generally occurs around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding.
