Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve

Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve, spanning 89.8 hectares, is located west of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. This biological Site of Special Scientific Interest is also designated as a National Nature Reserve and is managed by Natural England. The reserve features ancient ash and maple woodlands, unimproved grasslands, and scrub, making it a vital habitat for various invertebrates and rare plant species, including crested cow-wheat and man orchid. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year, with peak activity in August. Notable sightings include the Small White butterfly and Long-tailed Tit, both of which peak in August, while the Holly Blue can be spotted in May. The best time for observing these species is around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding.
