Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve

Castle Eden Dene is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserve located in the Easington district of County Durham, England. Nestled between the A19 and A1086 roads, it features the largest and biologically richest area of semi-natural woodland in north-east England. The dene's steep valley sides, primarily composed of Magnesian Limestone and boulder clay, have remained largely undisturbed, creating a unique habitat dominated by ash and wych elm, with notable yew trees throughout. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species, particularly in September when activity peaks around 1:00 AM. Notable sightings include the Wood Mouse, Bank Vole, and Grey Squirrel, all of which are frequently observed during this time. In spring, visitors may also spot Carrion Crows and Herring Gulls, while February brings opportunities to see Tree Sparrows and Coal Tits. The diverse flora, including rare species like sanicle, adds to the reserve's ecological richness, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers.
