Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve

Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve, located north-east of Thetford in Norfolk, covers 439.9 hectares of dry acidic heath, scrub, and woodland. Recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, it is also part of the Breckland Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. The reserve features dominant plant species such as heather and wavy hair-grass, creating a unique habitat for diverse wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for species like the grey squirrel and brown hare, with peak sightings occurring in February and March, respectively. The best time for observations is around midnight, particularly in February when activity levels are highest. The reserve is also home to breeding birds, including common curlews and nightjars, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers throughout the year.
