Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve

Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve is a 211-hectare ancient woodland located in Cambridgeshire, UK. This national nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest is managed by the Forestry Commission and is situated in Thornhaugh civil parish, approximately 10 km south of Stamford. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, the woodland is renowned for its diverse range of vascular plants, making it one of the most significant lowland woods in England. Visitors can look for various wildlife throughout the year, with notable peaks in sightings during specific months. April is particularly active, showcasing species like the Carrion Crow and Rook, while February is the best time to spot Siskins. The Wood Anemone can be observed in May, and Pied Wagtails are most prominent in June. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for optimal wildlife viewing.
