Arne Reedbeds National Nature Reserve

Arne RSPB reserve, covering 5.634 square kilometres in Dorset, is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a national nature reserve. Established in 1966, it features diverse habitats including lowland heath, acid grassland, salt marsh, and woodland, with notable estuarine reedbeds adjacent to Poole Harbour. The reserve is home to rare species such as Dorset heath and breeding Dartford warblers, alongside a herd of naturalised sika deer. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species throughout the year, with peak sightings occurring in February, particularly for Greylag Goose and Canada Goose. Notable species such as Cuckoo can be spotted in June, while bumblebees and Cetti's Warbler peak in the warmer months. The best times for observation are typically around midnight for several species, making Arne a rewarding destination for both casual visitors and dedicated birdwatchers.
