Colne Estuary National Nature Reserve

Colne Estuary National Nature Reserve spans 2,915 hectares near Brightlingsea in Essex, featuring diverse habitats such as saltmarsh, mud flats, shingle spits, and former gravel pits. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Ramsar wetland site, and National Nature Reserve, it is crucial for both biological and geological conservation. The reserve is particularly significant for wintering brent geese and black-tailed godwits, alongside various other bird species and unique plant assemblages like golden samphire. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see black-tailed godwits and brent geese, especially during peak observation times in October and February, respectively. The best time for sightings of black-tailed godwits is around 01:00, while cormorants and little egrets are most active in January. Additionally, October is a standout month for birdwatching, with various species, including marsh harriers and goldfinches, also peaking during this time.
