Flat Holm Local Nature Reserve

Flat Holm Local Nature Reserve is a Welsh island located in the Bristol Channel, approximately 6 km from Lavernock Point in the Vale of Glamorgan. This historically rich site includes the most southerly point of Wales and is designated as a Local Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a Special Protection Area. The island features maritime grassland and rare plants, such as rock sea-lavender and wild leek, alongside historical structures like a lighthouse and gun emplacements. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to observing significant breeding colonies of gulls, including lesser black-backed, herring, and great black-backed gulls. The island is also home to slow worms, which exhibit larger than usual blue markings. While specific sightings data is sparse, the best time to visit is during the breeding season when these bird populations are most active.
