The Wexford Wildfowl Reserve encompasses 936 hectares of reclaimed ‘sloblands’, featuring wet grassland, tillage, brackish-water channels, and reed beds. This internationally significant wetland is a partnership between the National Parks and Wildlife Service and is renowned for its rich diversity of birdlife, particularly in winter. The reserve is a designated site of importance for its habitat and the large populations of migratory birds it supports. Winter is the prime time to visit, as thousands of Greenland White-fronted Geese arrive in October and remain until mid-April, alongside Bewick’s and Whooper Swans, Light-bellied Brent Geese, and various ducks and waders. Observers can also spot flocks of Icelandic Black-tailed Godwits in nearby Wexford Harbour. Visitors are encouraged to explore the marked trails and enjoy the facilities, including an observation tower and hides, while respecting the wildlife and other guests.
