Small Wood

BirdWatch Ireland

The Small Wood Reserve is a tranquil area of deciduous woodland featuring a variety of mature trees, including oak, which extends to a small saltmarsh at Rusheen Bay. This reserve is characterized by its diverse habitats and is a haven for wildlife. It is open year-round, with limited parking available along the road, and visitors can enjoy views from stone walls overlooking the bay. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see typical woodland birds like Chaffinch throughout the year, with summer visitors such as Willow Warblers and Blackcaps enhancing the experience. The scarce Silver-washed Fritillary butterfly can often be spotted in the woodland, while winter brings Kingfishers and waders like Greenshank along the foreshore. Summer is the best time to observe Common Terns and Sandwich Terns in the bay.
