Little Skellig is an iconic BirdWatch Ireland nature reserve located 11 km off the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. This steep, rocky island features jagged pinnacles rising up to 134 metres and is renowned for its massive colony of around 35,000 pairs of Gannets, making it the largest breeding colony in Ireland and one of the largest globally. While access to the island is restricted, it can be viewed from licensed boat tours operating from Valentia, Portmagee, and Ballinskelligs during the summer months. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see the impressive Gannets soaring above the cliffs and diving into the sea. Although sightings data is sparse, the best time to observe these stunning birds is during the summer months when boat tours are available. While landing on Little Skellig is prohibited, the Gannets can also be spotted from the nearby Skellig Michael, offering a unique opportunity to witness these remarkable seabirds in their natural habitat.
