The Illaunmaistir Reserve is a small grass domed island located off the north Mayo coast, rising to about 100m. This unique habitat is notable for its seabird populations and is accessible only with written permission from BirdWatch Ireland. While the island itself is off-limits to the public, it can be viewed from the mainland or by boat, offering a glimpse into its vibrant wildlife. During the summer months, visitors can observe Puffins swirling above their breeding burrows, while Storm Petrels return to their nests under the cover of darkness. Breeding Twite can be spotted along the cliff tops, and occasionally, pods of dolphins or Minke Whales may be seen offshore. Although access is restricted, the reserve remains open year-round, inviting wildlife enthusiasts to appreciate its natural beauty from a distance.
